BREAK AWAY FROM TRADITION AND EMBRACE INNOVATION:
The 2nd Workforce Champion Series was held at the premises of Yang Kee Logistics Pte Ltd. Graced by Mr Lee Yi Shyan, Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry and National Development, the event drew participation from 50 business leaders coming forth to understand Yang Kee Logistic’s success in hiring and retaining talents.
Supported by the Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA) and Yang Kee Logistics Pte Ltd, the event was a resounding success with SME leaders taking back with them valuable and applicable ideas and concepts.
Yang Kee Logistics started out 25 years ago with only 2 men at its helm, it has since grown to a sizable company with more than 600 employees. Mr Ken Koh, a second generation business owner has shared the various Talent Management Strategies that the company implemented when it struck him that retaining his best talents was the way to go in order to take the organisation to a whole new level.
Sharing that Yang Kee Logistics was once stuck in a vicious cycle where the HR department took on a reactive role of rehiring each time an employee left, the best way of breaking out of the vicious cycle was to first change how employers view the function of their HR departments. Instead of viewing the HR department as a cost centre, positioning it as a profit centre was the first step towards the continued success of the organisation.
Where in the past the HR Department only took on administrative roles of issuing paychecks and posting job advertisements, the current HR Department takes on a proactive role and is involved in strategic planning discussions that the company wishes to undertake. This helps its management stays focused on their best resources – their people and relook into its main support system before any strategic business decisions are made.
"The sharing from business owners at the Workforce Champion Series 2 gave very practical and useful insights on the methods that can be deployed in retaining talents in an organisation. It sets us thinking what is lacking in our own organisation and how we can embark on the journey of talent management particularly important to SMEs where these companies faces a perennial problem of having to compete with multinational companies for scarce talent."
- Mr Bob Chew, Director of Comfort Design Pte Ltd
"Our company is also trying to move our HR away from just being a cost centre that handles budget to having strategies such as branding. It's good to take a look at what others like Yang Kee are doing."
- Mr Desmond Ong, CEO of Galmon (S) Pte Ltd
